SFBA March Chapter Meeting

What do the members of San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the California Landscape Contractors Association do on St. Patrick's Day? Head out to the nearest Irish pub for a pint of Guinness and a hearty meal of corn beef, potatoes, and cabbage? Guess again.

Instead of frivolity, we gathered for an in person chapter meeting at Celia’s Restaurant on Camino Real in Palo Alto. After a buffet dinner of Mexican food, we listened to three speakers. Gina Stanley and Debbi Abele with CLCA Insurance Solutions discussed the latest updates on coverage and explained how they work with different insurance companies to get the most competitive rates for members.

Then Lance Perry, also with CLCA Insurance Solutions, presented information about the new Cal Savers option for owners to implement 401(k) plans to employees. This program offers businesses an easy way to help their workforce save for retirement with no additional fees, no fiduciary liability, and minimal employer responsibilities.

As the pandemic winds down, SFBA/CLCA are moving towards more in person meetings. The next event will be on Thursday, April 14, 2022 and will run from 9:30-Noon. A free lunch will be provided to all current and prospective members. Come meet the CLCA SFBA chapter president Juan Carlos Esparza who will be cooking on the grill and answering questions about chapter benefits!

This is part of a Membership Drive and it is free to members and prospective individuals. No registration necessary.

SFBAC of CLCA Tour Zanker Recycling

On May 12, 2022, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of California Landscape Contractors Association went on a free tour of Zanker Recycling, 675 Los Esteros Road, San Jose. The tour started at 10 AM and end at 12 Noon with Zanker providing lunch. Over 30 people attended this event. Safety comes first... The group was very lucky to have as tour guide Jerame Renteria. He proved to be well informed about the various sites and answered the groups questions. Clearly knowing his subject well, he was an excellent spokes person for Zanker. The group was also lucky to have a fine bus driver who even managed, without a backup camera, to make a 3-point U-turn inside the organics recycling building. We were surprised to learn that 70% of the costs of running the site are tied up in transportation. Zanker Road Resource Management began operations of the Zanker Road Landfill in 1985 and was to be full in 5 years, but smart management has kept the site open. SFBAC Award Winning Entries

On Saturday, June 18, CLCA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter had their 2022 Landscape Awards banquet. With over 80 people in attendance, the evening started with a cocktail hour at 6 at Michael’s at Shoreline in Mountain View. A buffet dinner followed with before the awards were presented. Pictures of those attending the event can be found on the previous post. Now it is time to start the process of highlighting the winners. We are linking all the winners to their websites. An Achievement Award went to Urbanscapes Landscape Company for their backyard installation in the category of small residential. First place in small residential installation went to Paradise Garden and Landscaping. In the area of Medium Residential installation ($50,000 to $100,000), the Achievement Award went to Lifescape Custom Landscaping, Inc . Peninsula Building Materials Sponsors San Francisco Bay Flower and Garden Show

After a couple of years of quarantining on and off due to the pandemic, it’s refreshing to see events in the industry making a comeback in the Bay Area.   Last month the San Francisco Bay Flower and Garden Show came back strong at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. One of the highlights of the show was the “The Origins of Horticulture” garden display.   Set up as a walking path, it transported the attendees through the ages, taking them from Ancient Egypt to Japan. The entrance was designed with gold limestone pavers set in path fines and flanked by Utah Sunrise boulders. Ornamental statues, personality boulders, secret doors and garden benches gave viewer interest at every step along the way. The display showcased a number of California native flowers that were gorgeous and in full bloom.
